Immature almost caught when hovering over ship

Seen for a second or so close to ship or other side
from me - flying rapidly into sun's path. Appeared
thin-winged large shearwater sized, light grey
above white below. Wing tips seemed patched
with black. Perhaps gull? Low over water, gull
like wingbeats interspersed with glide.
