January 3rd. No second flight was made yesterday so it was not until today that we, Brass, Richardson and I, with four boys returned inland to Idenburg--see notes for flight in small note book. Approaching Idenburg range, which had its foot hidden in a 500 m high bank of cloud--rest clear--cloud bank dense. Two or three times we came down through it blind, almost to tree tops--rain and mist--then found a hole and located camp. Did little today--rainy, clouds, hot and enervating. Only 50 yards or so of vegetation dry. Up creek a little ways in PM, saw a short tailed, medium sized Chaetura?, dark below. 6 or 8 over creek , give a little chattering call. Soldiers sleeping in preparation shelter. January 4th. Rainy off and on, light rain, that is. Couldn't see top of range. Packing--full week's rations. When short of anything, left it out of February stores, but enough for February and March, I think. Heavy stores here to be sent up to 2000 and 1200 meter camps as opportunity offers. Water a little lighter. January 5th. Could see range for most of day, clouds high. A little packing. Leaving in AM. Teerink may return tomorrow; evidently not going to Macassar. January 6th. Idenburg to 1200 meter camp, 7 AM-2PM. We were about 600 m. at little clearing when plane came in.
