Christmas Island Progress Report Page 2 Motu Upua Two nights spent here by the whole party and an additional night by 2 members. 21 species were recorded of which 6 were breeding. 31 individuals of 8 species of birds were collected. This includes 4 specimens of Laughing Gulls. 30 blood samples were collected from 33 individuals of 3 species. 4 mice and 1 rat were collected. 3767 individuals of 4 species were banded. Partial collection of insects, reptiles, and pl ants was made from the ixland. Species Banded Pet. Population Wedge-tailed Shearwater 646 40 Christmas I. Shearwater 2000 40 Phoenix Is. Petrel 1100 35 Red-footed Booby 21 25 Main Island Three party members spent eight hours on the 23rd touring the western half of the island. (120 miles of driving) Two members visited Northwest Point for 6 hours on the 25th. Seventeen species were recorded and 1135 birds of 4 species were banded.
