SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION WASHINGTON 25, D. C. Page Two Insects 400 * individuals of 35-40 species were collected. A total of about 40 man hours were spent on insect collecting. Each of the four major habitats were searched; every species of plant was carefully examined for associated insect species; rotten meat was used to bait certain species, sweep-netting was done over a large pa rt of the island and Berlizi samples were run on old bird nests (4 species) and soil samples from major habitats. (8 samples). With the Berlizi material and the inests collected from the October-November trip we estimate that we have 95-100 percent§ of the insect species occuring on the island, as well as a representative sample of the Arachmida. Plants One vascular plant new to the island was discovered. One fungus and two species of marine algae were collected. Notes and photographs were taken of the vegetation in selected areas. Blood Samples 20 samples were taken from two species. No other species were available in sufficient numbers to make blood sampling practical.
