Mayhew 1952 May 5 Conaway Ranch, 2 mi. east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif. Spanow Hawk Shrike Black-necked Stilt Avocet Barn Swallow Cliff Swallow English Sparrow Coot Black Gallinule Marsh Wren Black Tern Forster's Tern Killdeer Canvasback Calif. Gull Black-cr. Night Heron Red-winged Blackbird Yellow-headed Blackbird Great Blue Heron American Egret Snowy Egret Song Sparrow This makes a total of 36 species seen today. The number of shorebirds seen was much smaller than on May 1. Plovers, for example, that were quite numerous May 1 were not even seen today. I don't know whether this was due to the time the trip was taken (1 to 3 P.M.) or not. Today was the 1st time I had seen American (Willow) Goldfinches on the ranch, + the first time this year I had seen Double-crested Cormorants on the ranch. A pair of Canvasback were seen in the large drainage ditch at the south end of the ranch.
