April 28 At 6 A.M. I was between wheat & barley fields to see in which fields the most mallards were searching for nesting sites. As I had already believed, the great majority of the birds were seen flying low over the grain (wheat) at the S.E. corner of the grain area (section 17). By 7:30 A.M. most of the ducks had either returned to the flooded rice fields or were loafing on ditch banks that passed through the grain fields. However, a pair would still be seen in the air occasionally when I left the area at 8 A.M. The birds seen this morning were: Red-winged Blackbird - 1 House Finch - 4 Mallard - 2 Marsh Hawk - 3 Coot - 2 Great Blue Heron - 3 Meadowlark - 4 Pheasant - 3 American Egret - 3 Horned Lark - 4 Killdeer - 3 Black Tern - 2 Pied-billed Grebe - 4 Red-backed Sandpiper - 2
