Feb. 26 Conway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
Baldpate - 3 Audubon's Warbler - 4
Canvasback - 4 American Merganser - 4
Mockingbird - 4
This made a total of 35 species seen today;
March 6 I spent this afternoon on the southern
end of the ranch, looking primarily for
evidence of territories being established
by the Mallard population. The sky
was partly overcast with occasional
sprinkles & a strong north wind was
blowing. Although a fair number of
Mallards were seen, no birds were
seen with definite territories as yet.
A fairly large number appeared to
be paired already, however.
An enormous flock of Canadian,
Hutchins & Cackling Geese was seen
near some ponds formed from rain
water in low spots. These ponds are
in the middle of former grain fields, so
there is no cover whatever for more
than 2 miles in any direction. As
a result, it awfully hard to
approach them too closely. I would
judge there were over 5,000 geese in
this one flock that I saw.
The birds seen, with their relative
abundance, on the ranch today, were
as follows:
American Pipit - 3 House Finch - 3
