23.
Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
nest contained 4 young that I would
judge to be less than 48 hrs. old, +
2 eggs. The I was on the nest the
first time I saw it, but she was gone
when I returned.
About 1/2 mile north of the pumping
station at the south end of the ranch,
in the mud flats just east of the main
canal, I saw a rather large flock of
Black-necked stilts + Avocets. Intrigued
in the flock I could see Marbled Godwits,
Long-billed Dowitchers, 2 White-faced
Sloppy Ibis, a Forster's Tern, + 8 Cinnamon
Teal. This is the first time I have seen
White-faced Sloppy Ibis in this area.
This spot is in the middle of Section 27.
A few moments later, some Greater Yellow-legs
+ a Blue-winged Teal arrived. I have
seen this "Blue-wing" in the area off +
on for the past 12 days.
About a mile farther on, a Western
Willett was seen in a group of Stilts,
Avocets, Dowitchers + Greater Yellow-legs.
Aug. 12 Today we made an aerial census of the
ducks on the Conaway Ranch. We flew
about 105 miles per hour 150 feet above
the ground. There was one of us
(Wendell Miller + I) taking 1/8 of a mile
on each side of the plane as it
flew back + forth over the rice fields.
