June 21
Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
We covered 32 acres of barley with the
harvester today. A total of 4 Mallard
nests were found today, none of which were
damaged by the harvester. There was a total
of 25 eggs in the mallard nests found today.

Today the harvester covered another 32 acres.
I found 4 mallard nests + 2 pheasant nests,
with a total of 20 mallard eggs + 18 pheasant eggs.
None of the nests were destroyed by the
harvester.

couldn't find the nest again, because there
was not sufficient cover around the
nest, or because the disturbance created by
the harvester had frightened them all away.

ranch looking for mallards. However, while

he left I found 2 more f + 1 or - 1 of
the f was flushed from a nest. Neither
of us can explain the apparent extreme
scarcity of these ducks at this time.

Today I found a pied-billed grebe nest
in the permanent ditch about 1/2 mile
west of the ranch headquarters. The
