1949
May 22 Conway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
Most of today was spent driving
around the ranch to give Earl Hubbs
a chance to shoot some cats for his
research problem. The weather was
warm, the sky cloudless, + no wind. A
number of Mallards were seen, but not
too many as pairs. In most cases,
the birds seen were a number of drakes
together. In addition to the birds seen
previously on the ranch, the following
were seen today: Red-shafted Flicker, House
Finch, Kingbird, Snowy Egret + Screech Owl.
June 15 Today I rode a grain harvester while
it was harvesting barley in order to see
how many pheasant + Mallard nests are
destroyed by the harvest. We covered 31 acres
today, + found 5 Mallard nests + pheasant nests.
Of this number, 3 were destroyed by the
harvester, the remainder were merely uncovered.
A number of ♀ Mallards were seen flying
low over the stubble, apparently searching
for their nests. Occasionally they would
drop into the stubble + walk around as
though looking for something. Rarely was
a ♂ Mallard seen. (30 Mallard eggs, 0 pheasant eggs)
June 18 We covered 10 more acres of barley today
with the harvester (a "side header"). 2
Mallard nests were found, with a total of 16
eggs. One of the nests was directly
destroyed by the harvester.
