Mayhew 1952 Experimental March 1 Today 36 eggs from the Gibson Farm were placed in the experimental incubator; 18 eggs at 85%, 18 eggs at 40% relative humidity (box 3 + outer room) (late Feb. 29). March 8 Candled the eggs today. The results are on page E 11. March 14 Today I set 203 eggs (140 from Thomas, 63 from Gibson). March 21 Candled all the eggs today. The results are on pages E 11, 12, 13. March 29 Set 196 more eggs today (83 from Thomas, 103 from Gibson, & 10 from Farm). 40% = 16 Gibson, 14 Thomas = 30 eggs. 65% = 26 " , 16 " = 42 " 75% = 12 " , 20 " , 10 Farm = 42 " 85% = 22 " , 18 " = 40 " 90% = 27 " , 15 " = 42 " March 31 Today I broke open 2 eggs from the 85% box from the 1st hatch (set Mar. 1). One was infertile, the other had an embryo that appeared fully developed, but had not yet absorbed all of the yolk. The eyes were sunken in, so it appeared to have been dead for a while. April 1 The electric power was turned off from midnight until 2 A.M. Heat was supplied to the incubator by 5 200 watt bulbs connected to an auxiliary power plant. Only 800 watts were used to keep the temperature up to normal. During the Mallard E 29
