Mallard 41.
June 6 Gray Lodge Refuge, Sutter Co., Calif.
Today more readings were taken from
duck nests on the refuge. The day
was 100% overcast with a strong
(about 25 m.p.h.) S.E. wind blowing. At
7:35 A.M. the air temp. at waist height
(43 inches) was 16°C., relative humidity 71%.
On bare ground at that time, the temp.
was 17°C., rel. hum. 71%. At 8:45 A.M., in
low dense cover, the ground temp. was
18°C., rel. hum. 66%. All readings today
were taken between 7:30 + 11:30 A.M. At
11:30, ground temp. was 24°C., rel. hum. 45%;
air temp (43") was 21.5°C., rel. hum. 44%.
Nest 18 - (Badwall) 2 intact eggs +
1 broken egg remained of the clutch.
The ♀ was flushed from the nest &
remained within 20 feet of the nest the
entire time I was there. Cover of wild
oats was about 12 inches high, but was
very sparse close to the nest. There was
lots of down in the nest. (Some heavy
paper was fastened around the sides of
the hygrometer so that the moisture
being measured came directly from the
nest.) The nearest water was about 50
yards away, Temp. - 26°C.; R.H. - 83%.
Nest 23 - (Badwall) The ♀ was flushed
from 6 eggs at this nest. There was lots
of down present in the nest. The nearest
water was about 15 feet away.
