Mallard 35.
May 1 Conaway Ranch, 2 mi. east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
[4] Woodland - Sacramento River Road. One ♀ with
2 young about 1 week old was seen first. A few
[5] yards farther west 1 ♀ with 11 young less
[6] than a week old + 1 ♀ with 9 young about
[7] a week old were seen. A ♀ with 5 young
about 2 weeks old was seen to cross a
road + go down into the ditch. A
[8] ♀ with 6 young about 2 weeks old was
found farther west in the same ditch.
[9] 6 young were seen in the big drainage
ditch at the south end of the ranch.
No ♀ was evident - these birds were about
3 weeks old.
May 2 Mrs. Argante told me of a ♀ with a brood
of 10 ducklings about 1 week old on a ditch
at the east side of Sacramento, Calif. that
were seen today.
May 10 Vic Morejohn told me of seeing a ♀ + 6
newly hatched ducklings on his place today.
May 16 Gray Lodge Refuge, Butte Co., Calif.
Today some readings were taken from
Mallard nests on the refuge. John Cowan
+ Don Beechman pointed out the nests
they had located. The results were as
follows:
Nest 22 - 8 eggs; some down present;
located under a brush pile near some
willows. The ♀ had been off the nest about
40 minutes, according to Don Beechman.
