Mayhew 1950 Mallard 30. June 21 Conaway Ranch, 2 mi east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif. nearest water. There was a fair amount of down present in the nest. ③ A nest was found in which all but 2 of the eggs hatched. The nest was about 200 yards from the nearest water. The wheat was about average in height (about 3 feet high) + not too dense. ④ A nest containing 8 eggs was run over by the header wheel. The ♀ flushed when the wheel was about 3 feet away from the nest. The young in the eggs were about 3/4 developed. June 22 Today I covered another 50 acres riding a combine. Only 2 nests were found all day, & only one of these was active. ⑤ A nest was found that contained the remains of 3 eggs that had hatched, & also contained 4 unhatched eggs. Young were present in all the remaining eggs, & were about 1/2 developed. The wheat cover was about average, & the nest was about 250 yards from the nearest water. ⑥ A ♀ was flushed from a nest containing 9 eggs. The header was about 10 feet away from the nest when she flushed. The wheat was sparse around the nest. The nearest water was 50 feet away. This made a total of 5 nests in 100 acres of wheat, or an average of 1 nest for every 20 acres of wheat.
