April 4 Mallard 25.
Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
ranch headquarters as far south as Todhunter Lake (sections 15 & 16). In addition, I walked the 3 ditches that I had not covered southwest of ranch headquarters. In these 3 ditches, I found only 6 breeding pairs, making a total of 82 breeding pairs in the area covered on April 2nd. 5 breeding pairs were seen in the area north & west of headquarters, while 18 pairs were seen east of headquarters in the area covered. This makes a total of 105 breeding pairs seen to date. On 2 occasions today, 2 or + 19 were seen, but on both occasions, when the birds took to the air, the 2nd or just seemed to tag along, not too close to the pair. Most of the ditches on the land north of headquarters were dry, which accounts for the small number of pairs seen on this part of the ranch.
April 10 This afternoon I covered the S.E. corner of the ranch looking for territories. Although I saw quite a lot of water that appeared to be good for territories, I counted only 4 pairs of birds. This brings the total breeding pairs counted on the ranch to 109. This means an average of 1 pair for every 172 acres.
April 26 A number of pairs were seen flying over barley & wheat fields early this morning.
