July 17 Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calit.
a road & disappearing into the tule on
the north side of the large reservoir
just west of the dog kennels. I was
able to scare 6 of the young out onto
the open water while the f was
fluttering wildly in the road & then
on the reservoir. The young would flap
their wings to help them over the water,
but they didn't seem to be able to fly.
10 a f and 6 youngsters as big as she
was were seen swimming along the
east bank of the main canal just
opposite the blackbird swamp (SW corner
of section 27). The entire flock swam into
the tule, where the youngsters preened
& stretched their wings while the f
swam at the edge of the tule in
a watchful manner.
The remains of 5 young were found on a
rice levee in the SE corner of section 19 .
None of them seemed to have been eaten,
although the heads of all of them were
missing. From the size of the remains, I
would judge they had been about 1 week old.
There was no evidence of a nest close by.
July 19 One youngster about 6 weeks old was frightened
III off a rice levee into the water. It
swam ahead of me for about 20 feet, &
when I tried to get close enough to net
it, it dove through some vegetation & disappeared!
