July 9 Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
it is located in the SE corner of section
19.
July 10 The ♀ could be seen still on the nest. The
(23) cattle have trampled everything around the
nest pretty badly, but so far have
failed to hurt the nest.
July 12 The ♀ flushed from the nest at my
(25) approach. There are only 2 eggs left in
the nest, but I can find no trace of
the remains of the others, so I have
no idea what has happened to them. These
2 eggs appear to be near the hatching
point. Although cattle have been in
this field since June 25th they haven't
damaged the nest yet.
(23) The ♀ flushed from the nest at my
approach. 6 eggs are in the nest
yet, but the other 2 have completely
disappeared without leaving a trace.
July 16 The ♀ was flushed from her nest on
(33) the rice levee this morning. The nest
still contains 9 eggs.
(23) The cattle have eaten or trampled all
the cover around the nest. One egg
has been broken. The ♀ has apparently
deserted, since the eggs are extremely
hot.
July 17 a ♀ + 10 youngsters over 6 weeks old
(9) (they were as large as the ♀, but still
couldn't quite fly) were seen crossing
