Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
approach. There are 5 eggs in the nest
that appear to be nearly ready to hatch.
The f flew over & beyond the ditch that
is about 100 yards west of the nest. The
barley has been cut from this field since
June 21st.
Today I saw the first ♂ in full eclipse
plumage this year. He & his mate were
in the large drainage ditch at the south
end of the ranch.

The f has apparently deserted this nest,
as all 8 eggs were very hot from being
exposed to the sun (11:30 A.M.). The nest
was undamaged, although 4 of the eggs had
been rolled out of the nest. None of
the eggs were broken.
July 2
(8)
a f was flushed from a plot of rice
next to a canal. I could find only one
youngster - about 4 weeks old - hiding in
the rice. When I made an attempt to
catch it, it ran over the canal bank, &
swam down the canal about 30 feet, where
it disappeared into the levee tubes.
July 9
(33)
a nest was found on a levee between
rice checks. All of the eggs had
apparently hatched. (SE corner of section 19)
a f was flushed from a nest on a
levee between rice checks. The nest
contained 9 eggs. The field is about ½ mile
south of the old barn & windmill -
