June 7 Strawberry + Woolsey Canyons, Alameda Co., Calif.
The sky was overcast all morning, but
it didn't rain except for an occasional
drizzle. A slight south-east wind was
blowing most of the morning. Our route
led us through eucalyptus groves, in which
we saw Great Horned Owls, Stellas Jay, Oregon
Junco, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and Brown
Towhee. Western Flycatcher, California Jay,
Purple Finch, House Finch, Mourning Dove,
Bush-tit, Spotted Towhee, Lazuli Bunting,
Song Sparrow, Arkansas Goldfinch, and
American Goldfinch were seen in a live
oak surrounding. Red Shafted Flicker +
House Wren were seen in the open —
the House Wrens were seen in a wire fence.
California Snail were seen on hillsides
that were relatively open. This made a
total of 19 species seen during the morning.
Also heard during the morning were: Pine
Siskin, Plain Titmouse, Warbling Vireo, Orange-
crowned Warbler, Bewick Wren, Swainson Thrush,
and Western Robin, for a total of 7 other
species encountered during the morning.
On the whole, the birds were all singing
rather commonly. The cloudy weather didn't
seem to quiet them at all. In addition
to birds, 2 Black-tailed Jackrabbits were seen
east of the cyclotron.
