Mallard 8.
June 11 Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
the bank. The ♀ stayed behind flopping
her wings & trying to get me to follow
her. The young finally hid in the bushes
ahead of me, & I was unable to scare
them out again. When the ♀ decided
I was far enough from her brood, she
flew out into a rice field.
② Upon returning to this nest, I found
things just as before — still 5 eggs, with
a little down around the top of the nest.
A dead ♂ was found along a ditch
bank. The head had been severed from the
body, but I could see no way of determining
the cause of its death, as it had been
dead for quite a period of time.
June 12 This morning I found a nest with 5 eggs
⑨ in it. There was no down in the nest. It
was very flat with little barley straw on
the bottom. The nest was 20 paces west
of a flag on the ditch bank.
⑩ Another nest was found about 50 yards from
#9, from which the young had departed.
Left in the nest were 2 mallard eggs &
1 pheasant egg. One duck egg was well on
the way to maturity, the other one was
unfertilized. The pheasant in the egg had
already developed downy plumage. The
nest was quite exposed, there being very
little barley around the nest.
