Mallard
Mayhew 1949 June 4 Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
then flew off accompanied by the or beyond
the ditch to the south. I didn't see her
again before I left the area.
June 5 (2) About 11 A.M. I flushed a f from the shore
of a small pond in the middle of a barley
field. She flew about 10 feet from the nest &
settled on the pond. At my approach,
she took off & flew in wide circles around
the pond. The nest, containing 5 eggs, was
composed of the dry sedge grass in which
the nest was located. The grass was
very dense around the nest. There were
less than a dozen down feathers in the
nest at this time. The nest was well
concealed by the grass growing over &
around it.
(2) About 2:30 P.M. a hen with 7 young
were seen in a drainage canal between
2 large barley fields. The young appeared
to be out of the nest just a short time.
The f led them into a patch of tules &
disappeared.
(3) Another nest was found in the same grain
field that #1 is located. It contained 4 eggs.
The nest consisted of about ½ down, ½ barley
straw. The growing barley was well arched
over the nest.
(4) The next nest had 2 mallard eggs & 1 pheasant
egg in it. The f Mallard was flushed from the
nest. The nest was composed of down & barley
straw.
