Maghew 1949 May 22 Conaway Ranch, 2 miles east of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif. but flew off out of sight without making even one circle of the area. June 4 About 3 PM I saw a ♀ fly up from a barley field, + on checking the area ① from which she flushed, I found her nest. I probably would have missed it, but for the fact that the ducklings in the nest peeped several times, giving me a clue as to the location. Except for one ② head sticking out, all the ducklings (6 in number) were completely covered with a mixture of duck down + pine grass. The nest, made directly on the ground, was profusely lined with down. The nest was located about 50 yards from a ditch on the south + about 150 yds. from a ditch on the west. The young were less than a week old; the remains of 2 eggs were still in the nest. The barley around the nest averaged about 24 inches high. One of the ducklings left the nest when I uncovered it, but upon being returned to the nest + re-covered, it remained quiet. Most of the ducklings were lying on their sides when I uncovered the nest, but they didn't seem to be bothered by my intrusion. They merely blinked their eyes & remained on their sides until I covered them again. Just as I was leaving the nest, the ♀ returned, made one wide circle of the area
