May 30 Crows Landing Highway, 9 miles south of Modesto, Stanislaus Co., Calif.
Red-winged Blackbird, Western Robin, Turkey
Vulture, and Western Bluebird. In the Upper
Sonoran zone, the Western Lark Sparrow was
seen in open grassy country, and the
California Woodpecker was seen in the oak
forests. In the Transition zone, in the
conifer forest, the Western Chipping Sparrow,
Stellar's Jay, and Sierra Junco were seen.
The weather was cloudy all morning, with
occasional showers in the Transition zone.
June 1 Leland Meadow, Tuolumne Co., Calif.
At 11:30 AM. I took a hike from the
cabin on Leland Creek up the hills to Leland
meadow. In the conifers on the way to the
meadow I saw Stellar's Jay, Sierra Junco,
and Western Chipping Sparrow. In the
meadow itself, I saw Brewer's Blackbird,
Western Robin, and Olive-sided Flycatcher.
One Robin's nest was found about 10 feet
above the ground on the east side of a
conifer, but there were no eggs in it yet.
It looked as though it had just been
completed.
June 7 Strawberry + Woolsey Canyons, Alameda Co., Calif.
Our route today was from the north end of
stadium through a corner of Strawberry
canyon behind Bowles Hall, north to Woolsey
canyon, then back east of the cyclotron
to the north side of Strawberry canyon,
then down the canyon to the stadium again.
