4.5 mi. W. of 1000 Palms, Riverside Co., Calif.
night was 11.1°C. (52°F.). This morning
at 0830 the air temp. was 13.4°C., the
soil surface temp. was 18.5°C., the rel.
humidity was 42%. As it was so
windy and cool out, we didn't leave
the car to look for animals until
1030. (Altitude according to altimeter
here at "Granddaddy Dune" is 810 ft.) At
this time the air temp. is 14°C., soil
surface temp. is 21.4°C., rel. humidity
is 38%. Sand on the lee side of a
dune, however, has a much higher
temp. For example, at 1050 we measured
air & surface temp. on the S.E. side of
a dune that is about 6' high and
covered on top with creosote bush. The
air temp. was 18.6°C., & the surface
temp. was 41.8°C. Only 2 lizards were
seen while we were looking - both
junior Uma inornata. They were
on the surface on the lee side of
their respective dunes. The first was
seen at 1100, the second at 1140. The
weather was so bad & the lack of
animals so discouraging, we quit looking
at 1145. We probed as much as 4 inches
below the sand under many bushes without
finding a thing. We reached UCR at
1305 after a total of 351 miles
covered on the trip.
