Mayhew 1958 Oct. 24 Palm Desert, Riverside Co., Calif. or so up Deep Canyon looking for Uta mearnsai. We saw only one near the entrance to the canyon. It was sitting in the open on the shady side of a rocky cliff. The sun had not reached these rocks yet today. The time was 1400, the air temp. was 22.8°C., and the rock surface temp. was 23.8°C. Even though we searched both shady and sunny areas (the sun shown brightly after the shower) no other Uta mearnsai were seen. The only other lizards seen on the research area were Uta stansburiana and Cnemidophorus tigris. Although no rains had fallen in this area recently, judging by the soil condition, considerable water had flown down the stream bed recently, and the stream bottom was still quite moist in most spots. We left Palm Desert at 1615 and returned to UCR. We hit rather heavy rain in Beaumont and the Badlands, so we didn't reach our destination until 1755. (It is 73 miles from Palm Desert to UCR.) The total trip covered 174 miles. Oct. 25 Stoddard Valley, San Bernardino Co., Calif. Jean Coulson returned from this
