Mayhew 1958 Oct. 24 1000 Palms, Riverside Co., Calif. about 14 miles west of 1000 Palms, at 0745. This site is 65 miles from UCR. It started to rain at 0755 while we were unloading our equipment. It stopped raining at 0800 after a fairly hard shower. The sandy surface of the area was damp 1 cm. below the surface layer. Just before the shower the air temp. was 19°C. & soil surface temp. was 20°C. The sky was about 80% overcast at the time. At 0815, just after the shower, the air temp. was 20.7°C., the surface temp. was 21°C. At 2 cm. (below the surface (1cm. beneath the damp layer), the temp. was 20.5°C., and 12.5 cm. depth the temp. was 24.5°C. Two journal Uma inornata were seen & captured at 0825. At 0840 an adult Uma inornata was seen sitting in the sun at the base of a chrisote bush. Two other adults were caught a little later when they were seen on the surface. One other one was stirred out of the sand at the base of some vegetation. We decided to see what animals might be out on “Granddaddy Dune” along the old garret - 1800 Palms highway. We reached this site at 1010. Altitude
