Journal 110.
Oct. 17 10 mi. E. of Phelan, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
and across Highway 395 to we were 10
miles east of Phelan, where we camped
for the night on a dirt road that
ended about 1/4 mile south of the paved
road to Phelan. We drove a total of 118
miles today.
Oct. 18 This morning we arose at 0700 and
ate before looking for lizards at
0745. At this time the air temp.
was 25.7°C., soil surface temp. was 29.2°C.
Although we walked a considerable
distance among the Joshua trees
and junipers, we didn't see a
single adult Sceloporus magister; +
only one young one. Other lizards seen
were: Sceloporus occidentalis, Cuta
stansburiana, Crotaphytus wislizeni.
We worked this area until 1000, then
started driving toward Phelan. We saw
several lizards on tree trunks and
telephone poles as we drove slowly
along, so we stopped and caught
several in this manner. The reason
we saw several was probably a
combination of warmer temp. (29.3°C. air
temp.) and covering a greater area
than previously. We drove down one
dirt road to see if collecting from
the car by driving slowly would
be efficient. We are convinced it
