When we left Newberry, we traveled east
to the lava beds produced by Piagah
Crater. We reached there about 1125. We
caught a total of 8 lizards here: 1 Phrynosoma
platyrhinos, 1 Uma scoparia, 1 Cnemidophorus
tigris, 4 Uta stansburiana, & 1 Urosaurus
graciosus. The air temp. upon our arrival
was 32.2°C., the soil surface temp. was
47.8°C. Nearly all the animals were
catched on the sand between the lava
outcrops, but a couple of Uta were caught
on the lava. For the amount of
territory we covered, we saw relatively
few reptiles. We left the area at 1245
when the air temp. was 36°C., & the soil
surface temp. was 48.5°C.

We stopped at the Stoddard Well Road
and walked around the area from 1445
to 1530. Although the area had received heavy
rains this summer (judging from the
newly washed gullies), and the creosote
bushes were in fine shape (some are
setting seeds now), not a reptile was
seen the entire time. Temps. when we
left were: air - 32.4°C., soil surface - 34.2°C.
One Uta stansburiana was caught a little
later (1645) five miles further south. By
this time the sun was nearly ready to set.
