Mayhew 1958 Journal 108. Oct. 16 1 mi. N. of Newberry, San Bernardino Co., Calif. Frank Aubrey & I left UCR at 1920 this evening, headed for Newbery. We drove through Hesperia to Lucerne Valley, then through Stoddard Valley to Barstow, Daggett and Newberry. We reached Newbery at 2215 (a trip of 3 hours), after driving 124 miles. We camped just west of Mt. View Road. Oct. 17 This morning we arose at 0700, At this time the air temp. was 17.2°C, the surface temp. (shade) was 12.5°C., & surface temp. (sun) was 17.8°C. The altitude is 1725 feet. We walked through around dunes that mostly were covered with mesquite. There was a fair amount of mistletoe scattered through the mesquite. This area is one mile north of Newberry on Mt. View Road. No lizards were seen until 0755. The first lizard caught (imm. Uma scoparia) was taken at 0825, and was the second lizard seen (the first one also was a young Uma scoparia). In all, only 4 lizards were caught at this location: 1 Uma scoparia, 1 Callisaurus draconoides, & 2 Cnemidophorus tigris. We saw only two or three lizards that we didn't catch. For some reason, very few lizards were active, even though the temp. was warm. When we left at 1040 air temp. - 31.3°C., soil surface temp. 42°C. (Barometric pressure - 28.1 inches).
