at this location at 1330 was
23°C. We retraced our route to the
Jenkins Lake turnoff, went to look
at Jenkins Lake, then drove the
4 miles from the paved road to
Jenkins Lake to the parking area
at the edge of San Gorgonio
Wilderness Area. We looked for
lizards here, but saw only one juvenile
Sceloporus graciosus running about,
even though the air temp. was
19°C. (66°F.) under perfectly clear skies
(at 1530). At this time the wind
velocity was 4 mph. from the N.W.,
relative humidity was 29%. The altitude
is 7650 feet. We returned to Riverside
from here, leaving at 1535 and
reaching UCR at 1650. The entire
trip covered 110 miles. The weather
seemed ideal to us, and we were in
good lizard country at the right
time of day as far as we know.
Nevertheless, few lizards were to be
seen. Since S. occidentalis is found
at lower altitudes generally than
S. graciosus, one would believe that
S. graciosus would be more tolerant
of lower temps. than S. occidentalis. How-
ever, we saw only adult S. occidentalis,
even above 6000 feet.
