Aug. 26 Journal 99.
1000 Palms area, Riverside Co., Calif.
then returned to Riverside at 1500.
In all, we traveled 211 miles, and
collected 27 specimens of 7 species.
Sept. 10 Barton Flats area, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
This morning at 0715 Warren
Gross and I left Riverside for
Barton Flats and the San Gorgonio
Wild Area. We reached the wild
area (about 50 miles away) at 0845.
There is a comfortable trail leading
from the parking lot over "Poop-out
Hill" on toward the summit of
San Gorgonio. We followed the
trail for a mile or so, then dropped
down into a beautiful meadow at
the edge of the south fork of the
Santa Ana River. Lots of birds and
some squirrels were active here, but
no lizards were seen, even though
the weather was very pleasant. We
caught one of Sceloporus graciosus & saw
several others of the same species
upon our return to "Poop-out Hill."
We didn't see any before that, however.
The first lizards we seen about
1145 when the air temperature was 22.2°C,
(72°F.) and the surface temperature
was 33.8°C. (92.9°F.). This spot is
about 8000 feet in elevation. Later
we dropped down past Jenkins Lake
