dunes and saw the tracks of numerous
other animals. None were the only
animals seen, however. We left the
dunes at 10:30 AM (PDT) (temp of air -
84°F.) and headed west again. We
stopped 11 miles west of the Sand
Hills to look for reptiles. The creosote
bushes were like young trees in the area.
The vegetation looked so verdant, we

with reptiles. However, we saw nothing
but tracks for the first 45 minutes
or so. We were on our way back
to the car when Fritz spotted a
Dipsosaurus dorsalis. We spent
another hour searching after that.
During this time, 5 Dipsosaurus were
captured and 2 more seen. One
Callisaurus draconoides was also
seen. None of the animals were over
50 yards from the highway, even though
we walked a considerable distance
from the road. Then we drove to El
Centro for "brunch" and some rest.
After an hour or so in the park
in El Centro, we drove up Highway
99 to Highway 78, where we turned
left & proceeded to Buns Bend. After
a side trip to look at Split
Mountain, which is rather spectacular,
