Journal 60.
Mar. 21-23 Salton Sea region, Calif.
At 2:30 P.M. Friday, March 21, the
Zoology 146 class (23 students attending),
Ed Koo & Rudy Ruibal accompanied
me to the west side of the Salton
Sea near Truckhaven. We took the
Truckhaven Trail toward Borrego,
camping 8 miles west of Truckhaven.
It began to rain very hard about
2 A.M. Saturday morning, and didn't
stop until 5:30 A.M. Everyone that
could got back into the station wagons
& pick-ups to spend the rest of the
night. The sun came out that
morning, however, and dried everything
out. We left Truckhaven about
noon Saturday & proceeded to
Highway 78, stopping due north of
the junction of San Felipe &
Carrizo Creeks (Marsh of San Sebastian).
One half of the students accompanied
me to the creeks while the other
half ran temperature transects through
mesquite dunes. Then we traded
groups and repeated the operation.
The creeks were quite high and
terribly choked with silt from
the heavy rains. This is the only
time I have ever seen the Arroyo
Salada and San Felipe Creek at
