Today the field class left at 6AM
for the desert between Hesperia, Lucerne
Valley, & Barstow. There was a cold wind
(~30 m.p.h.) blowing from the west, which
reduced the number of active animals
seen. Several Sceloporus magister were
captured in the debris beneath Joshua
trees near Hesperia, as well as numerous
Xantusia vigilis. One Sauromalus
obesus was caught in rocks about 7½
miles west of Lucerne Valley on
highway 18. One large Cnemidophorus
tigris was also captured at this spot,
and several small ones were seen.
Two Gopherus agassizi (1 large ♂, 1
young) were dug out of their burrows
about 7 miles north of Stoddard Well.
The birds seen in the desert were: horned
lark, desert black-throated sparrow, Scott
oriole, raven, one of the gnatcatchers, and
Brewer's blackbird (near Stoddard Well). The
route taken through the desert was from Cajon
