Ludwig, J.P. 1964 and counted the following numbers of birds: Black-necked Stilt - 116 American Coot - 17 Shoveller Duck - 250 (Count) (est. 325+- 30 birds) Sanderling - 6 Turnstone - 28 Plover - 5 Tattler - 2 I have the impression that there are fewer stilts here now than last month (saw no herons), also fewer Coots, but increases in the number of ducks, sanderlings and turnstones were apparent. March 2-17, 1964 Starbrite Cruise for March. Collected 1/4 of the 23 birds this month. March 20, 1964 Today I celebrated my 25 birthday by an extensive visit to Manana Island and spent most of the day there. The personnel of Sea Life Park have been most helpful in providing transportation and also in arranging for a reliable boatman. We were on the island by 11:00 and left approx. 1630. A total of 289 Wedge-tailed Shearwaters and 211 Sooty Terns were banded. No recoveries were made. 5 dark phase Wedge-tails were banded. Population estimates for the island in terms of Pairs of breeding birds are as follows: 40,000+-10,000 Sooty Terns (20 percent with eggs); 8,000+-3,500 Common Noddies; 1700+-500 Wedgetailed Shearwaters (1 egg located) [est. 70 percent of burrows dug in, 30-40 percent occupied during day, and approximately 1/3 of the birds present in burrows today were paired, i.e., 2 birds/burrow]. I checked the leg size of this population and decided that No. 4 size Bands were as suitable as 5's.
