Farther down from this area there were several beach areas with
valleys preceding them. Saw Wedge-tailed Tropicbirds in several of
these. Then on the leeward side the rain forest rather abruptly gave
way to first semi-arid, then almost fully desert conditions. Cactus,
century plants etc. It is my impression that the doves and sparrows here
were lighter in plumage tone than on the windward side. A series of
birds from each side would be very helpful. The desert side continues
all the way to Kihei, although the last 10 miles before Kihei is damper.
than the preceding areas. Cattle range over most of this area.
I stopped again at the Kihei Pond area and counted 7 Herons, 3
Sanderlings and photographed a lone subadult glaucus gull sitting on
the mud flats. Then I called it a day and went home to a luau at the
Ansai's - very bushed. The ride round Maui is very rough and difficult.

Today went around main-head, after a 0630-0700 watch at the 100
valley for leaving petrels this AM. But none were noted. In the
trip around the head, no seabirds were seen. Several of the valley's
were good reservoirs of area for White-tailed Tropicbirds, but none
were seen. A great many Rock Doves were seen along the way, but few
Chinese Doves, white-eyes, and Cardinals. This is a dry area most of
the way, Lahina in particular.
