Ludwig, J. P.
1964
Beginning January 1, 1964--Left Washington, D. C. - arrived Honolulu.
January 2 - Preparation in Honolulu for Starbrite cruise.
January 3 - 19 -- At sea on Starbrit: All field notes entered into
daily log on bird observations. A total of 572 birds seen and twenty-two
collected.
January 20-25--Operating in and about Honolulu arranging the February
Starbrite, Line Islands ATF trip, inventoried the materials in storage
at Pearl City, and planned field trip to Maui.
January 26--Maui: Flew here to Senator Ausai and was welcomed in home.
In p.m. went to Iao needle - thought I saw two two White-tailed
Tropicbirds near needle (at 3000 feet elevation).
730
Kihei Ponds - Many Black-crowned night Herons, Black-necked Stilts, 720;
two Sanderlings.
Kanaha Bird Sanctuary (one mile from airport)
Shoveller ducks >100, Black-crowned night Heron >20, Coot >20,
Black-necked Stilt >100. Shovellers here are resident ♂, ♀, and in all
plumages. Yellow-orange feet etc. Birds seem to have unusually large
bodies. Herons common and appear to be healthy. Stilts are numerous
and at least some are in molt as their heads and necks seem "ratty" and
missing feathers. Coots show little bright colors that are common in
breeding.
A number of immature herons in mixed plumages were noted. I saw
no adults with the long breeding plumes over the head. This race seems
to be grayer and perhaps shorter-winged than the race in Michigan.
