Spent much of today organizing materials for replacing worn our stakes, and the laying out of the new vegetation study plots. After an abortive try in the AM where we realized lots of holes in our supposed method, we reorganized and laid out 6 of the 10 in the afternoon. In walking through the antennal field I saw many unmarked albatross there where Bill and Ken handled 107 only 2 days ago. In the evening I wrote letters and spent some time merely organizing my thoughts - a difficult task.

Up today to find the thumb reswollen, and even larger than before. Soaked it for two hours, and began a regular treatment of aspirin, penicillin, and tetracycline. In the afternoon we chased after gooneys and got several hundred gooneys, mostly Laysans. After this excursion it is obvious that there are hundreds of new Laysans have come in during the last few days: Further, there are many more Laysans than Black-feet. In the evening I soaked the thumb again for 90 minutes and then relaxed at the flick.

Spent today working on the vegetation plots and staking albatross study nests. In the afternoon while setting traps in the study area I noted that there has been a marked decline of the vegetation there. The composit flowers have finished flowering and are now dying, scaveola is losing some leaves, and the grass seems to be static: It seems a little like fall out there. Many albatross there which are not tagged. Found ten black-feet on eggs on the west beach: No Laysan eggs as yet.

Up early today to work on the vegetation plots while Bill and Ken did the rats. Finished two loads of laundry and 4 of the five " rip-out " plots: The fifth should be finished with another 90 minutes of work tomorrow. Then we will finally have the plots all laid out. Staked out
