Phallus caninus 2573. " Plant about (888.R.) Congrilis berries, 13/4. 2-3 in. high. Volva double, bursting 2-3 divisions. The exterior contains a transparent, col- orless gelatinous fluid in immediate contact with the stipe. Interior volva a small whitish membra- naceous sac enclosing 1 base & stipes. Stipe simple, terete, tapering at each end, 1/4-2 in. long, bright red, coarsely cribrose, rather obtusely rounded at top & with a small round hole at apex. Spadix contained in an olive colored foetid mucus, adhering to the upper part of stipe. Caputulum 0. - Sec. ad terram in graminosi. Differs from Phalli I have seen in not having a gelatinous fluid contained within two membranes, & being nothing to separate it & imme- diate contact with stipe. " 2574. Phallus Ravenelii, B&. Caputulum conic (884.R.) free, umbilicate, covered (except at summit) with a some: what foetid olive-colored mucus - about an inch long, distinctly reticulated underneath. Stipe 4-9 in. long, hollow, white, reticulato & cribrose, tapering at each end. Volva double. Exterior about 2 in. long, 1/4 wide, ovate, light pinkish, containing between interior & exterior mem- branes a thin transparent gelatinous sub- stance; Interior membranaceous, pinkish. Sec. Earth in fallow lands. Santee. Obs. On dissecting young plant in young state, stipe is seen in an elliptic form, cells laterally compressed, which upon bursting volva become elongated & expanded, admitting its increase in length. The exterior volva contains between its two membranes a transparent gelatinous substance which completely envelops the nucleus, & bursting at its apex into 2-3 lobes, permits elongation of stipes. Next in order is olive colored foetid mu- cus containing spadix, adhering to & covering a corribly reticulated muce membrane, passing down- wards to about 1/4 in. of base of stipe. Then stipe is elongated, this continues attached & forms capitu- lum. Between caputulum & stipe is a thin white membrane, enveloping entirely stipe, upon its el- ongation, this membrane is torn & divided, 1 lower part remaining at base of stipe & forming interior volva; upper still adhering to stipe, covering its previous apex & extending downwards under caputulum. Last & innermost is seen in elliptic hollow stipe, tapering at each end, of 1 cells laterally compressed. The opening & expanding these cells causes rapid upward growth of stipe.
