Lehner, P.
1949
July 24 - continued
We returned in about half the
time; on nearing shore we decided to
try for a small beach (even though it meant
heavy surf) rather than attempt to find
the channel among the rocks through which
we came out - the surf was up - we
managed to ride the surf to the beach
area in the surf but had trouble after
we abandoned ship at about 35 yards out;
the surf threw us in and the
undertow dragged us out - with some
efforts we managed to make it to shore
only to have to explain our unusual
maneuvers to three onlookers - it was
almost dark when we arrived, so we left
none too soon; returned to Dr. Ely's with
our bedraggled selves, left the one widgetail, and
two paddles, then returned to the hotel - a
hasty meal, a bit of scribbling, a couple
cool lemons, and so to bed.
