Lehner P. 1947 Dec. 21 up again today to run errands; we made another trip to Pearl City only this time when we came out of the warehouse area we still had two large boxes (containing tiger clam shells) and a huge whale vertebrae ; when we pulled up to the gate the guard noticed the boxes, but not the whale vertebrae; seeing that he wanted an explanation, we told him that we had taken the in and were now going to take them to be marked - feeling that he was not quite satisfied I told him, "All we have are a couple of boxes and a whale bone." With this he walked over to the truck until he could see the large vertebrae, then his mouth just flopped open and he couldn't say a word - we drove off ; I'm sure he thought he was letting something get out, but I doubt if to this day he can figure out what; that huge vertebrae caused all kinds of stares and remarks all day long; at 8:00 P.M. Stadel, Stauden and I flew to Kauai, rented a car and proceeded to try to find a motel room near Lihue; we stopped off at the Hawaii Surf for a little entertainment and then returned to wake people up to get a room; we finally found a room just south of Lihue on Rt. 50.
