Feb.3 - continued
heading for "the other end"; we didn't set
the mouse traps, but helped stow the gear
away which had been up on the roof.
Feb. 4
the shutters were left down all night and
all morning so everyone slept late; at low
tide we counted Gray-backed Tern eggs:
Islet: 12 total, 2 new; Pier: 7 total, 1 new, 1 destroyed
Two Red-tailed Tropicbirds flew over the island
today - they appeared to be still looking for
a nesting site; fixed bike and got it back
in pretty good shape; put rubber shock pads
on the lead end of the cannon missiles in
anticipation of their getting banged around on
rocks; found an adult Red-footed Booby and adult
Great Frigatebird dead on the east shore; two
Christmas Island Shearwaters at the concrete slab
on the east beach - one under the slab, one
outside - still no egg; another X-mas Island Sh.
on east shore: band #: 514-78013; a large
number (75-100) of both Brown and Red-footed
Boobies are spending a lot of the daylight
hours in the nesting colony (near the highest point
of the island), but don't appear to be there after
sundown.
