JAN. 23
In the afternoon we made two shots with
the complete cannon net rig; we made the shot
on the beach south of the old pier and
shot into the wind - the wind blew the net
back some on both shots, but worse when the
cannons were elevated to about 15° on the second
shot - after the two shots we feel we have
the cannon placement, direction and angle
down pretty well and the wiring down - with
the loxan & on this time, the un-shunted
charges did not go off; in the P.M. we
mapped the Sooty area on the ground -
at 2225 they were still coming to the Island
in large numbers; I would estimate that
there were not less than 200,000 Sooties
on the Island at 2400; checked the
Grey-back eggs - on the pier I found the
2 eggs near the edge of the pier missing
and 2 crabs very close by - if circumstantial
evidence is worth anything, I would hint that
crabs may be causing some egg destruction.
