Nov. 25 - continued 1
and the sea subsided slightly, but the large
swells from the northwest continued to roll
in on us from the horizon; at 1:25 an immature
Red-tailed Tropicbird was collected and at
1:40 an immature Blue-faced Booby was collected;
the Booby's weight tore out the remaining
netting from a near-ridden long pole net and
the Booby escaped the first pass of the ship -
this must have given him courage, because on
the next pass he swam out of reach of the net -
he was shot four more times before he succumbed
and was brought aboard; at 2:50 an adult
White-tailed Tropicbird was collected; the
crew is now beginning to count the minutes lost
in picking up birds: to add fuel to the fire,
a Bonin type Petrel (tentatively identified as
a Cook's Petrel) was collected at 4:20 and
another immature Blue-faced Booby was collected
at 5:00; the watch was secured at 5:35 and the
crew looked forward to a night's headway toward
Honolulu without delay; I discovered this
evening that several of the now larger turtles
have completely lost the umbilical scar and
the edges of the plastron plates meet at a
juncture - s one of the smaller turtles still
have the vestige: the second movie was again
replaced by cards tonight - however, tonight
the sea was rougher and we had to contend with
our being slid and tossed around as much as
we did with bad cards; we lost another hour
tonight.
