-2- one full species (Dark-rumped Petrel) supposedly breed. It was felt that specimens collected immediately offshore might shed evidence, in the matter of gonadal condition, as to when these species breed on the island. Three specimens of Newell's Shearwaters and one specimen of Harcourt's Storm Petrel were collected. Gonadal condition of these birds is discussed in their respective sections in Species Accounts. Rough seas and necessity of using the impractical small skiff prevented the collection of a larger, more meaningful series. Rough seas along the entire return cruise track prevented collecting other than that mentioned at Kauai. The Sooty Tern was the most abundant species throughout the cruise and accounted for 32.2% of total birds seen. Wedge-tailed Shearwaters were next most abundant with 27.5% and Common Noddies third with 10.2%.
