Tucson is situated at the sink of the Santa Cruz River, which heads near the Mexican line and runs toward the Gila but all trace of a channel even is lost fifty miles before reaching that stream. The town was settled sometime about 1750 and was built in the usual Mexican style, of adobes. Since the advent of the Railroad some brick and frame buildings have been built, but even yet the majority of the inhabitants are Mexicans. Its principal trade is with Mexico. There are several wholesale firms carrying heavy stocks. Most of the merchants are Jews.
