Dryobates villosus. Maine (Lake Umbagog). 1881. May 27. Set F-4. On the point of hatching; ash stub stand- ing in the water; height fifteen feet. There were two other holes in this stub one of which, the lowest, was occupied last year by a brood of young. The present hole was evidently an old one as it was much blacker than the last year's one. " " Set G-3. Ash stub--height twenty feet--female sitting: eggs perfectly fresh. On May 14 we found a newly-made hole lower down in this same stub, and, as the third emerged from it, when we rapped on the trunk we cut it open but found the cavity unfinished. After this de-struction of her nest the bird evidently took an old nest-hole higher up. June 3. Set H-3. Nest found May--. 1882. Oct.8-22 The most abundant Woodpecker. They usually occured in paire--one we saw three together--in hard wood tim-ber in high land.
