Lake Umbagog.
Call note of
Sapsucker.
1909.
June 18.
The ordinary call of the Sapsucker is (perhaps) best described by
the term snarl. It has a peevish, irritable quality, suggesting that
chronically affected by on the part of the bird
the bird is in a fit of ill-temper Its resemblance to the scream of
the Blue Jay which some writers have noted is not close for the Sap-
pitches than that of any Jay.
sucker's note is lower and less resonant. It reminds me more of the
mew of the Cat-bird but is not closely like that, either.
