Oct. 26 Shot a young ♀ in nearly completed autumnal plumage,
near the west shore of the lake just north of the harbor. The morning
was very still time about 5 o'clock and my attention was drawn to
the bird by the noise of its hammering on the trunk of a live
spruce. It was busily at work digging for wood-borers and paid
no attention to me although I watched it for some time before
firing. Its motions and the noise produced by its pecking
were in many respects peculiar. It remained for several minutes
working at the same spot. I recognized it at once for it looked
smaller than P. acutinus, and although appearing nearly
black showed traces of tint the characteristic white.
