Not nearly as abundant as in July.
1874.
Aug. 20.
A brood of six young, apparently just from the nest,
on Cambridge River above the dam. They were very noisy,
keeping up a continual rattling, more subdued in tone,
but otherwise similar to that of the adult.

May 28.
A pair at work excavating a hole in a gravel bank
exposed by the cutting of a drain.
June 6.
Dug out the nest found May 28. Found it empty al-
though the hole was completed. It went in three feet
inclining slightly to the left and ending in an oblong
chamber about a foot long by ten inches wide.

A nest ina sand bank near Brown's Tavern, Grafton,
contained seven fresh eggs. The hole penetrated only
about three feet.

Set of seven eggs incubated a few days. Taken by George Hayward.
June 5.
Set B-7. Bank about two feet high by roadside;
hole entered about five feet; eggs laid on a heap of
fine fish-bones in a pocket at the extremity. Female
sitting; we thumped on the ground above and thrust in a
pole without starting her, but shortly afterwards as we
were standing in front of of the bank, she came out with
a heavy flutter and flew off over the woods. Nor did
she return although we heard her rattling in the distance.
This hole was at least an eighth of a mile from the lake;
eggs incubated about three days.
" 21.
Set C-6. Incubated seven days--bank of Cambridge
River below B Meadow; the hole penetrated about five
feet in sandy loam; eggs laid on nest of fine fish-bones;
female flew from the hole when we stamped on the bank
above.
